  2. SYMPTOMS. Signs during infancy may include marked lethargy, slowness of
  3. feeding skills, reaching for objects, lifting the head and sitting. There
  4. may be marked lack of responsiveness to the environment. All of these signs
  5. suggest possible subaverage intellectual ability.
  6. CAUSES in 80 percent of the cases are unknown at this time. The others may
  7. be attributed to many possible causes such as hereditary disorders, viral
  8. infections in the womb and chromosomal abnormalities. Complications such as
  9. bleeding, breathing difficulties, breech delivery or high forceps delivery
  10. may increase the risk of mental retardation.
  11. TREATMENT. Thorough physical examination, brain wave and other tests and
  12.  evaluation of the child's development are required for accurate diagnosis.
  13. .Delays in development of sitting, walking, drawing and writing may be due
  14.  to emotional problems or neuromuscular disorders.
